The Wellington Wolverines attracted a full house to the Wolverine Stadium on October 6 for their homecoming game.  Wellingtonfaced the fourth toughest opponent on their schedule in Cardinal Newman*, with the Crusaders taking claim to the 904th ranked football team in the country.

Both teams came out of the gates sloppy, combining for only 10 first quarter points, withWellingtontrailing 7-3 at the end of the first.  This was a satisfactory start for the Wolverines, considering the Crusaders are an offensive juggernaut, averaging 42 points per game.

Wellingtonwould chip away at the Newman lead, outscoring them 10-7 in the second quarter. Wellingtonfans were very satisfied going into halftime down by only one against the heavily favored Crusaders, and the stands were as electric as ever.

Newman came out of the locker rooms and put another touchdown on the board while Wellingtonput up yet another field goal.  The real drama began to ensue in the fourth quarter.  The Crusaders put up yet another touchdown in the fourth quarter, their 27th points of the game, putting them up by eleven.

Despite the game being seemingly in hand with an eleven point lead, the extra point was as important as ever, for football fans know, the difference between an eleven and twelve point lead is an extremely substantial one.  With possibly the games outcome hanging in the balance, Crusaders kicker Steven Holmes missed the PAT.  The Wolverines put together a quick drive and knocked in a field goal, cutting it to a one possession game.

Then came the all crucial onside kick, which was executed to perfection. Wellingtonnow possessed the ball, with great field position, and only aone scoredeficit.  With the stands rocking quarterback Cole Smallridge was put to the test.  The Wolverines couldn’t however put together a big play, and fell to the 5-0 Crusaders 27-19 in a thrilling homecoming game.
