Jeffrey Epstein: The story so far

Jeffrey Epstein, Palm Beach County resident millionaire elite with a telling past, hanged himself in his prison cell on August 10, 2019, in Manhattan’s Metropolitan Correctional Center after being charged with one count of sex trafficking conspiracy and sex trafficking minors.

News of his death came as a surprise to some after he had been on suicide watch before his death.  Reports of absentee guards, suspected falsifying of duty logs, and guards reportedly being asleep and not checking on him for hours at a time have caused strong public reactions.

Here is a rundown of the situation so far.

Epstein bought a property in the Caribbean called Little St. James Island in 1998 where he would fly friends to have parties and is suspected of having relations with female minors. According to locals, Epstein brought these underaged girls to his island until 2019, even after he was registered as a sex offender, and the authorities did nothing to stop him.

Allegations and Charges:

In 2005 he had allegedly molested a 14 year-old-girl in his mansion in Palm Beach. He has since been charged with paying minors as young as 14 to perform sexual acts during naked massage sessions in his Manhattan mansion between 2002-2005. According to prosecutors, e would pay his victims to “maintain and increase his supply of victims.”

In 2008 he was charged for soliciting a minor for prostitution, was sentenced to 18 months, and pled guilty, but was released after he spent 13 months in county jail. His lawyers negotiated to allow him to leave for 12 hours, six days a week, which resulted in public outcry

He also had connections in very powerful places. President Donald Trump was quoted in a 2002 interview with New York Magazine regarding Epstein: “He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his social life.”

It has been reported that former president Bill Clinton has visited Epstein’s island in the Caribbean, Little St.James Island on multiple occasions, according to flight records.

Epstein gained wealth and popularity as a primary investor and money manager for the founder of L Brands inc., formerly known as Limited Brands, who owns such name as Victoria’s Secret, PINK and Bath & Body Works.
